My name is Ann Mollohan and I am an 8th grade teacher at Tallmadge Middle School. I have had the privilege of working with SFC Norton for many years and I am seeking to nominate him as an Akron Beacon Journal Hero. Originally, he came in once a year to educate my 8th grade students about Arlington National Cemetery prior to going on the Washington DC trip.

Several years ago, he and I began taking our teachings further. Together, we have team taught my 8th grade students about Veterans Day. We have been lucky enough to work with a few people from the Cleveland VA who have also come into my classroom in conjunction with SFC Norton. Together, we have branched off into opening my classroom door to some Veterans who are prosthetic recipients. My students have been able to develop empathy for our Veterans and develop an appreciation for the United States of America. Without SFC Norton’s guidance and willingness to dedicate so much time to my students, most of this would not have been possible. He has volunteered countless hours that have led to days in order to work with my students. He has done this all out of love for the USA and wanting our youth to understand and appreciate how lucky each of us really are.

SFC Norton set up for my students to go to Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery to clean up the grave sites of Veterans. At OWRC, we were even able to ...

Jeff joined the Navy at 18. He served on the USS North Carolina during Operation Desert Storm. After 6 years of service he returned home with a chest full of metals. Upon returning home his drive to continue to serve his community was still calling him. He decided to become a firefighter/medic - graduating at the top of his class. Since graduating he has served his hometown community of Copley. Through hard work and incredible leadership he made lieutenant. Many of the people in the community know him as "Fireman Jeff" as he ran and taught Safety Town for many years. His first class is now graduating high school! He also instructed the Copley CERT Team for many years.
Jeff has not only proudly served his Country, he continues to serve his community. I could not be more proud of him and would love to see him recognized for his many years of selfless service to the community we live.

My brother is my hero. After time in the USAF, he came home, settled, and volunteered coaching softball and baseball. On May 9, 2009 he suffered an AVI which should have killed him. He got through it, and although he is now no longer working, he spends his time ministering to people with Alzheimer's disease. His faith and commitment never waver even on his worst days.
